Bryan Singer is set to direct his dream project and there won’t be a single mutant in the whole movie. We’ve got the details right now on Clevver Newsfeed. Move over X-Men, Bryan Singer has his eyes set on an 1870 classic for his next film. Deadline brings word that 20th Century Fox has officially greenlit director Bryan Singer’s next project, an adaptation of the Jules Verne classic, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. Production is moving full speed ahead with filming expected to begin in the fall and casting to begin soon. Though no release date has been set, a late 2017 or summer 2018 release seems likely. Singer will have to prep the film while he completes the finishing touches on X-Men: Apocalypse, which is set to arrive in theaters on May 27th. Regarding the film, Singer said quote, “Ever since I was a boy and first discovered the 1870 Jules Verne novel, I have dreamt of retelling this classic story. Without revealing too much, it contains not only the original characters of Captain Nemo, Ned Land and Professor Aronnax, but also some new and original characters and sci-fi plot twists culminating in a timeless adventure for all ages.” Singer came up with the idea for the story along with the script’s writers Rick Sordelet and Dan Studney. The fact that the film will include new elements coincides with the studios hope to turn the film into a new franchise. This will of course not be the first time the classic novel got the big screen treatment. Several versions have been made over the years with the most famous coming from Walt Disney Studios in 1954. That version starred Kirk Douglas and James Mason as the infamous “Captain Nemo”. Disney was set to remake the story last year with David Fincher at the helm, but the film fell apart thanks in large part to Fincher and the studio’s disagreement over casting. So, who out there is excited to see Bryan Singer’s version of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea and do you think it has a chance to become a franchise or will it sink like some other recent ocean set films? Head down to the comments and share your thoughts and then click here to find out which other books we’d like see turned into movies.
