X-Class: A Guide to Solar Flares Solar flares are classified according to their strength. The smallest ones are B-class, followed by C, M and X, the largest. A powerful X-class flare can create long lasting radiation storms, which can harm satellites, communications systems, and even ground-based technologies and power grids. Full Disk View of August 9 X-Class Flare An x-class flare began at 3:48 AM EDT on August 9, 2011 and peaked at 4:05 AM. The flare burst from sun spot region AR11263, before it rotated out of view. The image here was captured by NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) in light at 304 Angstroms. Sun Unleashes X-Class Flare This video taken by the Solar Dynamics Observatory in extreme ultraviolet (131 angstrom) shows the August 9, 2011, X7 class flare which started at 3:48 AM EDT from sunspot 1263. The brunt of the explosion was not Earth-directed.
